We've been considering making a gaiwan for quite some time and have received quite a few requests.

These are completely handmade using the same clay and glaze as our FangXia teacups to produce teaware that is as close as possible to the materials used in the antique porcelain items we know and love.   The clay base is a blend of clay similar to that used in Ming dynasty with high iron content, but finer sieving giving a more refined texture. The glaze is produced from fern ash and limestone in the traditional manner.

These were thrown by hand and fired in a wood kiln inside sagars (containers to protect the glaze from kiln ash).   These steps all add significantly to the cost, but we wanted to product something a little special for tea lovers who appreciate the extra care.

"Such a joy to use. The Gaiwan is pleasingly formed and the woodfiring gives it a very smooth tactile feeling and deep colour. It has a blue hue and fits well with the 50ml cups I have ordered as well. My first order from EOT and very satisfied: fast shipping and extremely safely packed, no worries of breakage at all! What I like most is the fairy thick material and the pleasing heavy weight. It gives me a strong sense of being grounded and the Gaiwan holds the heat really well.
